HISTORY OF THE SPORTS CLUB

The Petrotrin Sports Club began in 1945 under Trinidad Leaseholds Limited.  The company's management decided to establish places of recreation for employees to boost morale and encourage relaxation through participation in different sporting activities.  This has remained the key purpose of the Clubs over the years, especially at Pointe-a-Pierre, where the majority of the workers are based.

Since its beginning with Trinidad Leaseholds Limited, the company has changed names several times, to Texaco Sports Club, to Trintoc Sports Club to its present incarnation as the Petrotrin Sports Club.

Over the last fifty-eight years, the Petrotrin Sports Club has produced some great athletes.  Such names as Hasely Crawford, Horace Tuitt, Leroy Prieto, Raymond G. K. Davis, Rawle Francis, Wilton Jackson to name a few.

In recent years our Club members have taken the name “Petrotrin” both nationally and internationally, with members of our hockey section as well as members of our prestigious ladies football team being selected on national teams.  Such names as Atiba Whittington, Dwain Quanchan, Kerry Edghill, Bertrand Duncan, Kathleen La Rode and Antonio Gill have represented the Club on both the Men and Women national hockey team respectively at Pan Am Games, CAC Games and World Championships at different parts of the world.  Our female footballers have also done us proud over the years.  Names like Izler Browne, Donecia Castro, Germaine Gordon, Terrie Lisa John, Natalie Des Vignes, Teleshia Joseph and Arnold Murphy (Coach) are just some of the players who have represented us on the national women’s team participating in international competitions.

Some of our athletes were also fortunate to have attained scholarships to colleges in both the United States of America and Canada.

The Petrotrin Sports Club, Pointe-a-Pierre, has moved from stride to stride over the years and has made great achievements through its members.  The Club is known both locally and internationally for producing men and women of great athletic potential.

SECTION ACTIVITIES AT THE CLUB

ATHLETICS AND CYCLING

Our athletes participate in national competitions during the peak athletic season.  Head Coach Rawle Francis takes his charges through rigorous training sessions in preparation for competitions.  They participate in both track and field events.  During the off-season our athletes do road work and fitness training in the gym.

Over the years our cyclists have dwindled due to the unavailability of proper cycling facilities. The few cyclists that we have are kept under the charge of Coach Peter Griffith who takes them on road trips and training sessions at Skinner Park.  We still compete in competitions during the year.

BILLIARDS, SNOOKER AND CARDS

The Section is quite vibrant although it is made up mainly of retirees.  The members compete in numerous competitions throughout the year and they are quite successful as they practice daily on the two tables, which are located downstairs the Clubhouse.  We also have a Pool table, which is quite popular among the youths.

CRICKET

This Section is quite popular during the cricket season.  We have two teams (Reserve and Senior) that have been participating in the South Zone cricket competitions over the last five years.  Victory came to the section this year, as both our teams won out their respective competitions and have been promoted to the Super League Division.  There are two teams, an Under 15 and an Under 19 and they have been performing quite nicely during the season.

FOOTBALL

This is one of our more vibrant sections.  We have a Senior men’s team who participate in the Southern Football Association’s League, Big Six and Championships tournaments under the watchful eye of Coach Clayton Morris.  There are also Juvenile teams (Under 15, 17 and 19).  We also have one of the most successful ladies football team in the country.   Over the years our ladies have been fortunate to have acquired scholarships to schools in the United States as well as being selected to represent the country’s national women’s football team.

HOCKEY

The Petrotrin Sports Club participates in the Championship, Trinity and Under 19 tournaments organized by the Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board for both Men and Women.  Our teams have won numerous times over the years and members have been successful in being selected for national duty on both the Men's and Ladies' National Hockey teams.

LAWN TENNIS

Our Head Coach, Mr. Lennox Francis, trains our young charges daily.  He also organizes camps during the August vacation, which are quite successful.  Our tennis players compete in tournaments island wide.  Presently one of our members is attending a training camp in the United States.  She is just fourteen years of age.

GYMNASTICS

Though quite vibrant over the years the section has dwindled to just a few.  The staff at the St. Peter’s Private Primary School has accommodated our young charges in their gymnasium over the years for training purposes.
