Petrotrin donated $100,000.00 towards the third annual Tobago Gas
Technology Conference, TGTC 2008, which was held over the period October
7th-10th 2008 at the Vanguard Hotel in Tobago.
TGTC is the brainchild of the University of Trinidad and Tobago and is
driven by its virtual institute, the Natural Gas Institute of the
Americas, NGIA.
Based on its contribution, Petrotrin was deemed a platinum sponsor to
the conference, which boasted of twelve sponsors overall. |
|
Petrotrin’s sponsorship afforded the Company sole rights to the premier
social event of the Conference that is the Gala Dinner and Cultural
evening and Awards function. |
|
This was held on the
evening of Thursday
9th
October, 2008. Petrotrin’s Corporate Communications Department served as
the direct liaison with the UTT staff to coordinate this event.
TGTC 2008
attracted record participation on two fronts: firstly, the registration
of a total of 162 participants as delegates and presenters, and
secondly, the presence of at least ten foreign countries viz Iran,
India, Malaysia, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Venezuela, Barbados, Canada
and the USA. |

The conference provided a forum for increasing knowledge and learning of
next generation energy technologies and thereby served to create a
necessary platform for innovation and sustainability of an energy future
for Petrotrin and the wider national community.
The following were the topics covered by the conference: |

Petrotrin
provided seven delegates to the TGTC. These were from the Strategic and
Business Development and the Health, Safety and Environment Departments.
A Corporate Communications team covered the conference proceedings
focusing on Petrotrin’s participation.
With the
official opening of the conference, Mr. Egbert Waterman, the General
Manager Exploration and Development participated with excellence as a
panellist on the Energy Skills Development panel. His key messages were
the need for:
 |
Relevance in the degree programs to match the needs of
Petrotrin and industry overall, citing Petrotrin’s vast
holdings of heavy oil and the new fiscal incentives proposed
by the Government in the 2008 budget for heavy oil
development. |
 |
Mentoring within Petrotrin as a tool to treat with the gap that exists
between senior management approaching retirement and the pool of
technical staff at varying levels of experience. |
 |
Accelerated training as a means of bridging the skills gap and
developing requisite expertise. |
|
|
Based
on feedback from delegates, presenters and other participants at the
conference, the general consensus is that TGTC 2008 was a resounding
success as evidenced by the quality of presentations, the level of
participation by both local and foreign delegates and presenters, the
balanced agenda that treated with the technical and commercial aspects
of next energy generation technologies and, of course, the success of
the social events. |
