Fifth Summit of the Americas

First Ever Spouses Programme held at Pointe-a-Pierre

History was created in Trinidad and Tobago in the month of April as the country hosted the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain. During the period April 17th to 19th 2009, 34 hemispheric heads of state and government from North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean participated in a series of roundtable events focused on the theme, “Securing our Citizens Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability.

It was the first time the Summit of the Americas was hosted in the Caribbean. It was also the first time that programme was planned for the spouses of the respective heads of state and government. Petrotrin featured prominently in this event.

On April 18th 2009, wife of the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago and Minister of Local Government Mrs. Hazel Manning hosted eight of the 34 spouses of delegates at a specially designed programme at the Petrotrin Pointe-a-Pierre Staff Club.

Representing Suriname, Belize, El Salvador, Barbados, Jamaica, Mexico, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the spouses arrived at the Petrotrin Pointe-a-Pierre Club at around 9.30 a.m., where they were warmly welcomed by the Executive Chairman of Petrotrin, Mr. Malcolm Jones.

After light refreshments, the spouses began their session, which echoed the theme of the Fifth Summit of the Americas. Each spouse spoke of the crucial links between environmental sustainability and poverty and considered ways in which they could each contribute to the environmental development of their respective countries.

After the formal discussions ended, the First Ladies were treated to a cultural presentation, which showcased the cosmopolitan heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.

The First Ladies, accompanied by the wives of members of Trinidad and Tobago’s Parliament, then took a walk through the Pointe-a-Pierre Wild Fowl Trust, an eco-reserve and conservation site located on the Petrotrin Industrial Estate. The intention was to have them witness the symbiotic relationship between the environment and the oil and gas industry.

The spouses’ programme ended with the First Ladies returning to the capital city, Port of Spain on the water-taxi.
