Petrotrin,
like its predecessor companies, is committed to the development of
indigenous art forms and the steel pan is of special significance given
its humble origin from discarded and rusty oil drums. Notwithstanding
current budgetary constraints, the Company has maintained its
sponsorship of flagship steelbands- Petrotrin Phase II, Petrotrin
Siparia Deltones and Petrotrin Hatters – while at the same time
assisting some 18 other steelbands and rhythm sections, most of which
operate in our fenceline communities.
Among the
bands assisted this year are: Birdsong, Chatham Rhythms, FUCSDAT, Jah
Roots, Katzenjammers, Koskeros, La Brea Nightingales, Mt Moriah Pan
Groove, Pan Elders, Plymouth Steelband, San City, Self Help Marines,
Shades in Steel, Southern Marines, Starland, Steel Xplosion, Tornadoes
and Trinidad Valley Harps.
At a
recent cheque distribution exercise, leaders of the respective
steelbands expressed deep appreciation for the Company’s continued
support. Many of them indicated that with the downturn in the economy,
some of the traditional sources of assistance had dried up, which makes
Petrotrin’s assistance even more significant.
The year
2009 was a very successful one for Company sponsored steelband Petrotrin
Phase II and Petrotrin Siparia Deltones. Both bands performed at the
National Panorama Finals, placing second and seventh respectively. This
year, Petrotrin Phase II again placed second at the National Panorama
Finals, while assisted band Steel Xplosion copped the title in the
medium category. |
