Refining and Marketing

The Administration Building, Pointe-a-Pierre

PETROTRINís Refining and Marketing Division is directly responsible for the Companyís refining operations at the Pointe-a-Pierre Refinery as well as the purchase of crude oil and sale of our refined products.

The Pointe-a-Pierre Refinery is unique in many regards. In addition to being the only oil refinery in Trinidad and Tobago, it is the only refinery in the world to co-exist with a wildlife park, as it shares a compound with Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust.

The refinery is located on the west coast of Trinidad on 2,000 acres of land, approximately 35 miles south of the capital, Port of Spain. It has the capacity to process a wide variety of crude oil with varying gravity and sulphur specifications, giving the Company the ability to purchase crude oil from a range of suppliers.

In its thrust to improve its international marketability, PETROTRIN recently engaged in a Clean Fuels Program at Pointe-a-Pierre, which involves the Gasoline Optimisation Program (GOP) and the Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) project. These vital projects will help to ensure a full conversion capability of 168,000 bpd, enable the company to produce cleaner and more environmentally friendly gasoline and diesel to both regional and international markets and will impact positively on the companyís profitability and viability well into the future.

PETROTRINís combination of a strategic location and very competitive fees makes Pointe-a-Pierre the region's first choice for third party crude processing. This is but one of many business opportunities PETROTRIN holds out to petroleum entrepreneurs on its industrial estate.

The refineryís process flexibility is further complemented by its large efficient ports - at Pointe-a-Pierre and Point Fortin - accommodating vessel sizes from grade carriers to mainland riverine craft. The Port of Pointe-a-Pierre, sheltered in the Gulf of Paria midway along major north-south Atlantic sea-lanes, is the natural provider of bunkering services for all ocean-going craft.

The Point Fortin facilities deliver the region's best strategically located terminalling services.

In 2012, PETROTRIN also took the decision to explore bunkering opportunities in the Panama Canal as yet another strategic move to position the Company at a key international transit point, in a move to take advantage increased exposure and attract further marketing opportunities for the organization.
