United Petrotrin Under New Management

Recently a new Management Committee was put in place for United Petrotrin football team for the period of 2008 to 2011. The Management Committee comprises Arnold Corneal, Chairman; Larry Lalchan, Secretary Ulric Mc Nicol; Ms. Roseanna Hospedales, Mr. Keith London, Mr. Dennis Turton, Dr. Victor Coombs and Mr. Steve David who are all members of the committee.

These officials are responsible for the effective administration of the United Petrotrin Team to enable it to achieve its strategic objectives. These objectives include: developing players, enhancing communities, lifting the standings of community football and of course, winning matches.

In 2005 Petrotrin's Board decided to have a professional football team. An administrative team was also installed at that time. The Board envisioned a team that would enter the Trinidad and  Tobago Professional Football League with players drawn from all over the our neighbouring communities.

The Philosophy continues to be that participation is the key. More importantly, creating synergies between Southern communities, promoting positive alternatives to youth delinquency and winning the hearts and minds of our neighbours are as important as winning on the football field.

Petrotrin and its predecessor companies have long been noted for support of football in fence-line communities throughout south Trinidad. These include communities such as Point Fortin in the South West, Guayaguayare in the South East, Penal, Fyzabad, Santa Flora and Marabella. Over many years the company has pumped large quantities of funding into football leagues and competitions. The famous Strike Squad of 1989 included more than 6 employees of our predecessor companies.

Petrotrin's involvement in football has not only provided an avenue for players to showcase and develop their talents, it has fostered and strengthened intercommunity relationships. Over the years, Company personnel have served in critical administrative and technical capabilities in the football arena.

United Petrotrin Update

The United Petrotrin Football Team continues to make vast improvements this season as the Oil Men continue in pursuit of gold in the 2007 Trinidad and Tobago Pro League.

After six games the team has placed sixth overall in the Pro League and is moving on to the quarterfinals of the Courts Pro Bowl Competition.

“At the moment we are in sixth position with nine points, the same as W Connection though the Savonetta Boys have a better goal difference which puts them in fifth position,” said United Petrotrin Manager Larry Joseph. “We have two wins, three draws and one defeat. Our wins have come against Caledonia and North East Stars, teams that had the advantage over our team last season. We have also had creditable draws against Joe Public, the defending champions and San Juan Jabloteh, the former champs.”

Joseph commended the team’s performance for the season.

“We are doing really good so far,” he said. “Compared to last year at this stage we are having better results against the better teams. We are well placed for the 2007 season and I believe that we can and will improve our placings this season.”

United Petrotrin head coach Brian Williams has also commended his players’ performance.

In the last game held at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar on May 5, the United Petrotrin team put up a valiant fight against CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh, ensuring that the game ended in a draw 2-2 though Jabloteh had taken the early lead.

United Petrotrin faces Joe Public in the quarterfinals of the Courts Pro Bowl Competition on May 11. The winner of this game will move on to the semifinals on May 18.

United Petrotrin Players Serve on National Team

Three members of the United Petrotrin Football Team have been selected to serve on the Trinidad and Tobago National Team. The players are midfielders Romauld Aguillera and Keon Daniels and forward Abiola Clarence.

For United Petrotrin Manager Larry Joseph, this selection is a significant achievement for the team, which was launched just two years ago (in 2005) and which finished eighth in Pro League Competitions in 2006.

“I think it is absolutely wonderful,” said Joseph. “The fact that our team was able to supply three players to the national league speaks volumes for us. It certainly says that our programmes for these players are working.”

The United Petrotrin Football Team further boosted its image as a rising team, when it participated in a practice game against the national team recently.

The game, held at the Ato Boldon Stadium in early March, ended in a draw with both teams scoring one goal and the United Petrotrin team enjoying the better of the exchanges.

“There was an overall excellent performance by our team,” said Joseph. “The efforts of one of our new players, 17-year old Shervon Frederick was particularly outstanding. After that game, national coach Wim Rijsbergen indicated that he was impressed by our team’s performance.”

Joseph said these achievements have spurred on the team in its preparations for the 2007 Pro League where it aims are to improve its standings, defend its Toyota Classic Title and continue groom its players for further opportunities in football.

In its preparations for the 2007 Pro League, the United Petrotrin Team recently went on a tour for one week in Guyana.

“While we were in Guyana we played against the teams Alpha United, Pele FC and Conqueror FC,” said Joseph. “We won all three games.”

Joseph said he had high expectations for the team this season.

“We took on a few new players this year and our team members continue to enjoy a wonderful relationship,” he said. “We look forward to carrying that throughout the season. If we maintain this team spirit on the field, then we are bound to improve on our standings this year.”

The 2007 Pro League Competitions begin on April 14. The United Petrotrin Team will be opening its first game against Joe Public at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya.

United Petrotrin eyes gold at Youth Tournament

The United Petrotrin Football Team continues its pre-season training in preparation for the 2007 Trinidad and Tobago Pro League Tournament.

United Petrotrin Manager Mr. Larry Joseph said, “Pre-season training is in full swing and the players are rounding into match fitness and conditioning and are eagerly awaiting the opening of the pro league in a couple weeks time. The United Petrotrin 2007 team would include a number of new players who we are hoping to do very well in the competition.”

In the meantime, The Trinidad and Tobago Pro League recently opened its 2007 Youth Development Tournament for the Under 15 and Under 17 Divisions. The Under 13 Division is set to start playing in July.

The Pro League Youth Tournament was launched on March 4 with nine teams competing for three rounds of football. To date, after playing just two matches at the Petrotrin Fyzabad grounds, the United Petrotrin youth teams have moved up to rank among the top three teams in the tournament.

Of the two matches played, the United Petrotrin Under 15 team has won one match and drew the other.

The first match, played against W. Connection on March 4, ended in a draw with no team securing a goal. The United Petrotrin team reversed this situation in their second match, played against Superstar Rangers on March 11. In this match, United Petrotrin players dominated the field and emerged victorious scoring three goals to their opponents’ one. The Petrotrin scorers for this match were Jamal John and Travis Francis.

The results from the second game pushed the United Petrotrin team to second position in the tournament with four points, just two points away from the leading team.

The Under 17 team also played two matches but were not as successful, losing the first match to W. Connection with the score 0-1. The team went on to win the second game with the score 2-0. Petrotrin scorers for this match were Shimon Joseph and Mkesi Modeste. This score pushed the Petrotrin Under-17 team to third position after Defence Force and Joe Public.

Upcoming matches for both Divisions are set for March 18 and 25. For further information on these matches, please contact United Petrotrin Manager Mr. Larry Joseph at x. 6415.

United Petrotrin Drives Away with Toyota Classic Trophy

United Petrotrin Football Team and management with the Toyota Classic Trophy

In a move resembling its performance at the end of the last season, the United Petrotrin Football Team has edged out top contenders to win the Toyota Classic Knockout Competition.

The Petrotrin team drove away with the Toyota Classic Trophy and $30,000 first prize after defeating finalists Superstar Rangers by a landslide score of 4-0.

During the finals, held at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium on November 3, the United Petrotrin team dominated the opposition, turning back all challenges from the superstar players and scoring the first critical goal after only thirteen minutes. After United Petrotrin Forward Beville Joseph scored the first goal, the team played with increased confidence and by the end of the first half, Sylvester Teesdale had added two more goals to bring the United Petrotrin score to 3-0 over their beleaguered opponents.

The second half saw Superstar Rangers come out with renewed vigour and purpose, but while the team pressed desperately for goals, none of their efforts were converted due to some outstanding saves by the United Petrotrin goalkeeper Tristan Charles.During one of its few raids forward in the half United Petrotrin once again took full advantage of some loose marking in the Rangers defence ,which allowed Teesdale to convert another header into his hat-trick in  the  85th minute, bringing the final score to 4-0.

At the end of the game, Charles was named “Man of the Match” and Teesdale was awarded the “Golden Boot”.

Team manager Larry Joseph commended his team’s performance.

Noted that the team had won a similar competition- the Lucozade Big Six- at the end of the 2005 Pro League season, Joseph said: “The team has also grown a lot in the past few months. We are now playing some of our best football and our confidence is very high.”

United Petrotrin faced Caledonia AIA for the semifinals of the Toyota Classic at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium on October 27 and won with the score 2-1. Previous games for the Toyota Classic were played against Starworld Strikers and North East Stars. United Petrotrin won both games with the score 2-1.

Commenting on his team’s performance at the finals, Joseph said, “We are very happy that we have managed to win one of the Cups for the 2006 Pro League especially as we will not be able to defend the Lucozade Big 6 trophy this year. Our goals for this season were to finish in the first five and to reach one of the Cups. To date, we have exceeded one of our goals as we have won one of the Cups. We are very proud of our achievements for this season. Thanks very much for the support of the Manager, Corporate Communications Arnold Corneal and the Technical Staff- Head Coach Brian Williams, Technical Director Edgar Vidale and Assistant Coaches Philbert Jones and Floyd Lawrence.”

United Petrotrin Team Improves Performance

United Petrotrin Team Improves

United Petrotrin remains seventh in the 2006 T&T Pro League but the team’s technical staff remains confident about the team’s future chances.

On August 8, the team played against Joe Public, one of the leading teams in the League. The first half of this game was one of attrition with no clear-cut chances on either side. In the second half, United Petrotrin pressed hard for the opening goal and came close in the 60th minute with an effort by midfielder Kevon Clement. Joe Public scored against the run of play with a free kick in the 85th minute. Defender Felix Seales had one last chance to even the score for United Petrotrin, but the Joe Public goalkeeper saved his goal bound shot.

Prior to this game, the United Petrotrin team also faced Jabloteh and North East Stars.

The game against Jabloteh was totally dominated by the United Petrotrin team but ended in a draw. United Petrotrin won the game against North East Stars with the score 2-1.

United Petrotrin Team Improves

Team manager Larry Joseph said the team’s performance has improved significantly since the beginning of the League.

“While we have not improved our position in the standings because the other teams also won, this says volumes for our performance,” he said. “These are teams that would have beaten us at this time last year. The fact that we could have beaten North East Stars and hold off Jabloteh speaks volumes for the performance of the team under the astute leadership of Head Coach Brian Williams and his technical staff.”

The team continues to train every day at the Palo Seco Velodrome and at Guaracara Park.

United Petrotrin Moving Up

With five games to go before the end of the second round in the 2006 Trinidad and Tobago Pro League, the United Petrotrin Football Team has begun to close ranks on the top performing teams in the League.

Though still seventh in the standings, United Petrotrin has accumulated 16 points after a decisive win against Tobago United recently, and is now just one point behind the sixth placed team Superstar Rangers and two points behind Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA.

In the game against Tobago United held at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago on July 18, the United Petrotrin players demonstrated increased confidence on the field and maintained a better possession of the ball.

Team members continuously broke the Tobago defence and created a number of goal scoring opportunities. Striker Marlon Lewis took advantage of one of these opportunities in the 35th minute of the game to score the first goal for United Petrotrin. Beville Joseph scored the second goal in the 85th minute.

Commenting on his team’s performance in the League thus far, United Petrotrin coach Brian Williams said, “Of the 13 games we have played, we have won four, drew four and lost five. We have ten goals for us and eleven against us. This score places us just one point behind Superstar Rangers who is still sixth. I am confident that we would improve on this score as the League continues.”

Williams said the team is continuing to pursue its goal to place among the top five teams and compete in one of the Cup Finals by the end of the season.

“The team is improving generally as the results would show,” he said. “And during training we continue to focus on specific areas of our game where we have identified weaknesses. While I think there is still a lot of work to be done, I believe the team is going pretty well and I expect to see a stronger Petrotrin team by the end of the season.”

United Petrotrin meets the Defence Force team next. This game is to be held at the Palo Seco Recreational Ground on July 22. Other games to be held before the end of the month are against Caledonia AIA on July 25 and North East Stars on July 29. These games will also be held at the Palo Seco Recreational Ground.

United Petrotrin now Seventh

United Petrotrin Training

The United Petrotrin Football Team has now dropped down to seventh position in the 2006 Trinidad and Tobago Pro League standings.

This means even more intense training for members of the United Petrotrin team during the Pro League break for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Competition

United Petrotrin Team Manager Mr. Larry Joseph made this statement recently when he provided an update on the team’s performance, shortly after the first game of the 2nd round in the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League. He said while the team is still in a fair position to achieve its goal of placing in the top three at the end of the League, everyone would have to put in a lot more work during practice sessions.

There are ten teams participating in the 2006 Trinidad and Tobago Pro League, which began on April 8. Each of these teams must face each other for three rounds of football.

“So far we have completed the first round, with a final game against Joe Public at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya on June 3,” Mr. Joseph said. “Of the games we played in the first round, we have two wins, four draws and three losses, which keeps us at ten points and places us seventh in the standings behind Superstar Rangers.”

United Petrotrin opened the second round of the League, with a match against Vibe CT 105 W Connection at the Petrotrin Palo Seco Velodrome. The host team conceded victory 1-0 in that match, with the only goal being scored by W. Connection’s Andre Toussaint in the 32nd minute.

“The League is now on a break until the end of the World Cup,” Joseph said. “The United Petrotrin team would go on a break for one week and then continue training from June 15.”

Teams participation in the 2006 Trinidad and Tobago Pro League Competitions are also judged for a number of other competitions including the Pro-Bowl Competition, the First Citizens Cup, the Toyota Classic, the National FA Competition and the Lucozade Sport Big 6 Competition.

So far, the teams have already participated in the Pro Bowl Competition, with the finals between Jabloteh and W Connection held on May 26 at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium. The United Petrotrin lost 4-1 in its first quarterfinal game against W. Connection in that knockout competition. The other competitions are still to be judged. The United Petrotrin Team is the defending champion for the Lucozade Big 6 Competition.
